Progress

Well, final cruise payment was made. I used points from credit card to get a GoPro Hero 6 ordered. We got visa and passport photos and mailed Bert’s passport off for renewal. I can thank a blogger for alerting me that we have to fill out visa applications ourselves so I ordered extra photos. I foolishly assumed the cruise line filled out visa applications when they give you a visa package. Regent Seven Seas is so helpful that it isn’t a stupid supposition. I have read multiple World Cruise blogs and people have provided useful information. I am beginning creating draft pages so I have a short blurb on each port and the the excursions we have booked. This will shorten the amount of time I need to get the blog up while on the cruise.

Tomorrow I take out suitcases and begin packing Cruise specific items. I bought a backpack at Costco in the back to school sale. This is useful for beach trips. I’ll roll the beach blankets I have and put them in the backpack in the suitcase. I like having the Turkish towels since we won’t look like tourists with ship towels. I have nightlights and towel clips. I’ll make a list pre cruise and then note how many of the items I found really useful.

It is nice having all this time to be organized for our new home away from home. 48DA21C4-342E-48D5-9A66-1DBEBB721F3F

What others recommend

I’ve been reading cruise critics message boards today and here are some items that others posted to consider. Two posts seemed to sum things up.

special items that can make a cruise cabin “home” for months at a time
packing for lengthy journey.
communication with loved ones at home
eating strategies for long term dining on a ship (ok except lobster every 10-20 days is ok with me)
staying fit on a long cruise
staying well on a long cruise
Negotiating with a travel agent

The biggest thing I can suggest first up is research every port for your requirement for visas and get them underway
if you need alot then definitely use a visa orginisation even though they are expensive it is the only way to do numerous visas

second is see a travel doctor for any and all innoculations you should get – don’t skimp

Third – use your bucket list to determine main ports you wish to do very well
the shear cost is too daunting to do all well, and most are good enough to do on your own

fourth – set yourself daily expenditure budget
and stick to it

Of these things we have the magnetic photos, night light for the bathroom, plugs, dry erase board

We have free laundry and dry cleaning so have decided to pack for 2 weeks and buy things we are missing

We got T-Mobile so we can text and we will post as time permits. We get some free phone time from ship so will use that. We can FaceTime or MarcoPolo or WhatsApp when in port.

Eating will be a challenge, but Bert can get soup, smoothies, and ice cream.

Fitness I plan on walking and swimming when not in port. Bert will probably have enough activity with excursions, but I’ll check out a trainer onboard.

Medical is available onboard and we have insurance. I definitely am in to extra hand washing. I read to get a copy of medical records and I’ll have to get medication for 131 days.

We already chose a travel agent.

I agree that research is helpful. With so many ports I purchased Sterns Guide to the cruise vacation. It discusses every ship and every port. I will expand with fodors and TripAdvisor

Regent handles the visas so luckily this is not something I have to fuss with. Bert’s passport is good until after we return and I’m not sure if we need to get another. Mine is good til 2023.

We both need to see a travel doctor, Kaiser won’t let me see one until 3 months out.

We have excursions booked in most ports already. I’ll review the ports we don’t have them and get them booked. I’m not sure if Bert will be able to do that many, so some of this is life everything else, be flexible.

How to plan for a World Cruise

I have never taken a World Cruise so this was a big question. I also think this is a very personal question, as no two people are alike. While I have read about people taking a dozen or more suitcases, that is not my style, even if I had enough to fill a dozen suitcases. The other extreme is take a backpack and throw in a few basic items. This is my style if I’m backpacking but not for cruising. The basic strategy I have decided is to pack as if I am going on a two week cruise, and relax, enjoy and bring an extra suitcase in case I find purchases along the way. I need to take a wheelchair and a walker for Bert. This will be the first time He has needed these items, but I want him to enjoy and not be worn out. The cruise company will ship two bags each so I will see if I can arrange Bert’s wheel chair as one of his bags, and take the walker on the plane.

Here is a list of items I have found to be useful outside of clothes. Both Bert and I have hanging toiletries bags and these keep the bathroom neater. My friend Scott introduced us to these. Ziplock bags are useful and I usually take 3. This trip I plan on taking 6 each. They are useful for beach trips. I like being able to see and so I will get another pair of glasses and a prescription snorkel mask. There is nothing more frustrating than going snorkeling and not being able to see the fish. I also don’t like using someone else’s mask. I have dry pouches for our phones. I have the clips for our beach chairs to keep towels in place. I have pink flamingos and Bert has clown fish. I got Turkish beach towels and put them in a day pack. We will not be identified as tourist as easily and they are absorbent. We have a dry erase board so if we are not on the same tour and opt to go someplace we can let each other know where we are. I also got an adapter so I can plug in multiple electronic devices. I’ve checked out the library onboard ship and plan on bringing a kindle, iPad, phone, and may purchase a laptop. I am also purchasing a GoPro. I am decorating the cabin with some magnetic frames with family pictures. I’ll also get some magnetic clips. I’m interested if you are reading this and have traveled what items you are glad you brought.

Cruise and cancer

As we finished the baseball trip we had a World Cruise planned, but Bert had a sore throat and we went to the doctor for the third time in a year. He sent up to a throat specialist and we learned within the next 48 hours that Bert had throat cancer. The oncologist said because of Bert’s age she was reluctant to treat him, she said we should consider sailing off into the sunset. I asked Bert what he wanted, and he said I want to live. I plan on having a 100 year birthday party. We canceled the cruise and began the focus on saving Bert. The doctor said there was a 50/50 chance of survival. We had Bert’s birthday party and friends and family came together to celebrate Bert’s life. The next day Bert began radiation. He was a trooper. We had support from friends and family and even our beloved San Francisco Giants. We decided to sell our condo and took off to spring training. We went to all the Giants home games. Bert said there were 3 places he would live New York, San Francisco, and Washington DC. After spring training we decided to check out DC and New York and decide where to go. We were headed toward DC and learned Gina Nibbi had an offer on our condominium. We accepted and decided we better figure out where to live. We ventured from Phoenix to DC and began looking at condominiums. We found a condo two blocks from the ballpark with a river view and fell in love with the Navy Yard. We placed an offer and it was accepted, but we couldn’t get in for two months. We began exploring DC and got Nationals season tickets. Shortly after our daughter was accepted into law school at American University in DC.
